Some broadcast news — because we are a radio show, right? — you may or may not have heard yesterday:

Former Aston Villa dynamo Ian Taylor has been named “summariser” covering Derby County matches for BBC Radio Derby this season. It’s another step forward for one of England’s rising ex-player commentating stars.

Reigning Hermann Trophy winner Mami Yamguchi (above) was a coveted signing for Florida State out of Japan when she first joined the Seminoles. As workouts for the 2008 season begin, it’s worth noting the program again had the touted recruiting class from the perspective of Soccer Buzz. Defending national champ USC’s is rated No. 17.

Keeping Up

How has the Scottish Premier League transfer market been shaking out the past few months? Led by Kenny Miller’s Rangers move (naturally) having to tangle with Celtic, there have been signings to take note of.

To set the tone for this afternoon’s show, here is the recent David Beckham column from Los Angeles Daily News Galaxy writer Scott Wolf, who will be appearing later to talk about various MLS topics.

Olympic Spirit

Unquestionably, this ever-dragging club-country saga is dominating the Olympic headlines. Get past that, however, and there are some other storylines very much worth exploring.

For instance, a major portion of Italy’s next generation about to take over for the veteran regime wrapping up will finally be on full international display. Only three players on its roster play on a Serie A Big Four side. One of them is 5-foot-4 (no misprint … 5-4!) next big Italian thing Sebastian Giovinco (above).

Also worth keeping tabs on is Ivory Coast’s chance to surge on a more level international playing field and what on-loan Charlton midfielder Zheng Zhi and teammates might be able to show the rest of us about the near-invisible Chinese pro club scene.

Putting the Eastern Conference’s stronghold this season in MLS further in perspective…

*First, the boss stat that keeps coming up: In 54 head-to-head league matchups, the East has won 28 and picked up 11 draws, losing just 15 times (or less than a third of all those games.)

*In all, the East has outscored the West 77-60 in the head-to-head series.

*Showing how widespread the success against the West has been, the East’s top three teams in the current standings haven’t even provided major contributions to the rout. New England (2-8), Columbus (4-5-1) and Chicago (2-3-3) are a combined 9-16-4 against the Western Conference.

*On the road, the East has managed to pave down a winning 11-10-7 record. In those matches, they’ve forged a 39-34 scoring edge. The missile in that scoreline: 10 shutouts among those 28 games.
