Cuauhtemoc Blanco’s increasing volubilty as an MLS superstar, strengthened by last night’s MVP showing at the All-Star party with West Ham, makes one wonder how much it is helping drive up Jared Borgetti’s value for being brought in as one of the next to or three designated players to come through the door.
Under the current climate of this summer with Blanco’s wild success in Chicago, it’s easy to forget how short he falls of Borgetti in the scheme of Mexico’s all-time scoring forwards. Borgetti. Borgetti’s 241 club goals in 431 Mexican Primera games (a solid 0.56 per match rate) trumps Blanco’s 143 scores in 376 appearances (0.38). Not to mention, Borgetti has netted 46 internationally in 90 Mexican national games (0.51); Blanco is at 34 for 97 appearances (0.35).
Side note: how often does it happen where the top two attacking players of their nation’s generation share the same birth year? Blanco turned 35 in January while Borgetti will be there on Aug. 14.
