Starting Here

I was purposely vague when asked to predict England’s starting lineup on this morning’s show. Like game predictions, lineup prognostications often do nothing to shed perspective on the subject at hand and can be a waste of everyone’s precious time. Face it, as crucial as this match is for the United States in its quest, it’s a completely different excercise for Capello and England.

All the thinking that normally goes into building a match-wining side is out the door; not that this isn’t a must-win for the English’s fragile confidence, but the best or even the most deserving 11 won’t be put out in this stage of Capello’s project. With all that in mind, here is my crack at figuring out tomorrow’s lineup that should feature some chances taken without further a due:

GK  Green

LD  Bridge

D  Terry

D  Lescott

RD  Brown

LW Downing

CM Gerrard

CM Lampard

CM Barry

RW Beckham

F  Rooney
