Frankly, the Galaxy’s five goals yesterday saved the league from another rough scoring performance. There are no standards for how many goals constituite an exciting brand of soccer, but you figure the general fan likes to see a solid 2-1 back-and-forth game as opposed to a 2-0 win or the sometimes frustrating 1-1 draw. So a league averaging about 2.5 goals per week probably qualifies as a very healthy one offensively.
Thanks to this flashy flow chart below, you can see that MLS has struggled to reach that number over the past month after a quick start (this takes into account only full, 7-game matchweeks):
April 6 weekend, 28 goals (4 per game)
April 13 weekend, 20 goals (2.8)
April 20 weekend, 17 goals (2.4)
April 27 weekend, 21 goals (3)
May 4 weekend, 14 goals (2)
May 18 last weekend, 19 goals (2.7)
