Two things struck me about New England’s 1-0 win over Dallas last night: 1.) The Revolution desperately need to scour the country (or beyond) for any out-and-out finisher from the striker spot that might be available, and 2.) set-it-up, knock-it-in Dallas can be had rather easily if offensive possession is kept well under 55 percent, […]
Just remember, going into tonight’s Revolution-Dallas game (5 p.m., ESPN2), the Eastern Conference is off to a 6-3 lead (with two ties) over the Western Conference in head-to-head interconference matchups this season. Some serious debate will follow in the months to come whether this can be used as an accurate gauge to measure the higher-quality […]
Sorry, had forgotten and am still pretty darn bamboozled that times were so disparate for United last season that Darren Fletcher got starts in not one, but both Champions League semifinal legs against AC Milan — not to mention the FA Cup final against Chelsea. Anyway, in that Red Devils 3-2 win at Old Trafford […]
Cristiano Ronaldo misses the penalty kick barely minutes into the match, which means the overkill stage for comparisons to all others in important competitions will be reached around when the second-half whistle is blown.
With Manchester United’s 11 out for tonight’s matchup at Barcelona, it’s almost as if Sir Alex Ferguson is trying to make a statement to critics skeptical about a penchant for ‘choking’ first-leg matches on the road with a more possession-conscious mix of players.
Tonight’s attack-heavy list sent out by Ferguson is below, which (side note) of […]
Just as the Liverpool crowd entered full voice in the fourth minute of extra time at Anfield, Liverpool’s Norweigan defender Jon Arne Riise belted out a surprise note in the form of a stunning own goal.
Liverpool’s 1-0 stranglehold became a shocking 1-1 draw, shifting the advantage to Avram Grant and Chelsea.
Considering the luck of Liverpool […]
John Arne Riise’s gaffe will leave a far more indellible mark on this match, but let’s not forget a similar diving head-clearance by Terry led to Dirk Kuyt’s first goal of the match. In either case, both defenders had little choice with how to deal with pressure in the penalty box, so maybe the two […]
Maybe it is true you can measure a great soccer game by the individual central-field matchups on both tips of the field. Unfolding right now on the Liverpool end is Torres against Chelsea albatross John Terry; over on the Chelsea side, it’s Drogba against venerable Jamie Carragher.
Surely enough, look who’s starting at striker for Chelsea, dammit. Actually, I mean great. When you have no allegiances for these types of matchups, you root for the best players to play and Drogba is probably the most dangerous on the field right now. I didn’t say the best, I said most dangerous.
My own […]
Here’s my Champions League Challenge picks just e-mailed over to Page:
Liverpool 2, Chelsea 1 (No Drogba, Essien too much for me)
Barcelona 1, Manchester United 0 (Ronaldo couldn’t score in Blackburn, so how Spain?)
Let the games begin!
