Futbol Imitates Football on Eastern Seaboard

Just hours ago, the deal was done and another international superstar was headed to Major League Soccer.  Just minutes ago the deal was done, and Juan Sebastian Veron has decided to stay in his native Argentina.  SI.com reported the seemingly inevitable earlier this morning, that former Manchester United and Chelsea midfieler, Juan Sebastian Veron, would leave Argentina’s Estudiantes de la Plata for a lucrative $4 million-per-year deal with DC United.

But just moments ago,  Veron backed off of the deal and has decided to stay with Estudiantes.  Two hours ago, this was more than a finished deal.  Veron was schedule to fly into the nation’s capital  Tuesday and was to be introduced on Wednesday as the newest MLS superstar.

These sort of backroom back-offs have become almost a daily theme this time of year, and while Veron is a stud player and not the coach of the Atlanta Falcons or LSU Tigers, his deception of DC United could seriously hurt the franchise.  United has approached offseason contract negotiations and trades with the idea that Veron would be a member of their team next year.  Instead they’re left with a $4 million “contract kitty” and no one to fill the offensive void that could be left by the departure of Jaime Moreno, Christian Gomez and maybe even MLS MVP Luciano Emilio.  Certainly stunning developments that will have a lasting impact on the upcoming MLS season.

We’ll have more on this story on Tuesday’s edition of 101Soccer Live.
