Aging Milan Aim for Title
ITALIAN JOB/Anthony Evgenidis

Adriano Galliani and Carlo Ancellotti need to seriously consider renting “No Country for Old Men”.

Keeping the goalkeeping core of Dida (35), Kalac (36) and Abbiati (31) intact is not exactly what the Rossoneri faithful had in mind after a disappointing 5th place finish in Serie A last season.

The addition of Gianluca Zambrotta (31) on the other hand has been welcomed with open arms as an Italian international and a player who despite his age still plays at a high level. The projected starting backline in defense would include Marek Jankulovski (31), Alessandro Nesta (32), Kakha Kaladze (30) and Gianluca Zambrotta (31).

With the injury to Nesta Milan are in the process of signing Philippe Senderos from Arsenal on a season loan deal with an option to buy. Senderos would provide adequate backup for Nesta as well as following a theme for Milan this summer by signing a player with something to prove coming into this season.

We haven’t even mentioned the ageless wonder Paolo Maldini (40) or Massimo Oddo (32) the serviceable rightback.

In midfield Clarence Seedorf (32), Andrea Pirlo (29), Massimo Ambrosini (31) and Gennaro Gattuso (30) aren’t getting any younger either. Upfront Super Pippo Inzaghi (35) is still terrorizing defenders and managers alike with his on the edge offside gambles. Andriy Shevchenko who is about to turn 32 next month makes his famous return to the Rossoneri after what can only be described as a “nightmare” move to Chelsea 2 years ago at the top of his game.

Last but not least (in age of course) we have Brocchi (32), Favalli (36) and Emerson to round out the forever youthful players for Milan.

On paper this team looks like an old dying tree with traces of wear and tear all over it and in dire need of a youth movement. Mathieu Flamini (24), Ronaldinho (28) and Borriello (26) are a real breath of fresh air for the “maturing” squad and that may very well be what this team needed last year during its inconsistent form.

Missing out on the Champions League might just be the best thing that could have happened to Milan.

Milan’s management had no choice but to change their transfer policy and make several acquisitions as well as subtractions insert Gilardino (finally a sighting), Cafu and Serginho as the headliners to part ways with.

What Ancellotti has on his hands is a team with the combination of experience and most importantly hunger.

That combination may not equal long term success but it certainly does bode well for them in the upcoming season where the UEFA cup games will provide a rare but reasonable opportunity for Milan to achieve European and domestic success. Expect to hear plenty chants of KaPaRo (Kaka-Pato-Ronaldinho) throughout Europe next season.
